James tries really hard to save the band from falling apart. It would probably be easier if he wasn’t also going through a crisis with his ‘perfect’ relationship with Lily.
Their music was pure chaos. Peter’s drums were a bit too loud for anyone who really listened. James skipped a few notes, pretending he was waiting for the crowd to sing, when everyone there knew he just couldn’t hit them. Sirius’ charm was more evident than his guitar skills, even though they were pretty good.
That was theirs, and it was perfect for them. It fit them. Everyone knew, the moment they said they were starting a band, that it would sound like this: three boys determined to be the best of the best. Remus’ mouth curved at the edge as he watched Sirius with that thought.

“Oh, no, I—” Sam stammers, making a hasty gesture of refusal at Eglée “—don’t, not that way, I mean—” He cuts himself off with a shaky breath, staring at the floor in defeat when he realizes that both Eglée and her companion are laughing at him. “Don’t misunderstand me,” he huffs self-deprecatingly, because in for a penny, in for a pound. “I’m happy enough to make friends with the ladies, but I wouldn’t know what to do with one if you dropped her naked in my lap with a neon sign’s worth of instructions the size of the Moulin Rouge. Satisfied?”
“Not a ladies’ man,” says the janitor in the brocade dressing gown, with a piss-taking air. He’s a Brit; just Sam’s luck. “Got it.”
“Santiago,” Eglée says impatiently, “this is Sam Barclay. Sam, this is one of the good-for-nothings I warned you about.”
“A neon sign’s worth of instructions,” Santiago says thoughtfully. “The size of the Moulin Rouge, even. Are you a writer?”
