‘Can’t, bro. I’m working.’ JJ says down the phone line to John B who’s just asked him to come hang out.
‘Working? Why? Not even rich assholes are dumb enough to go out to the club during a Hurricane.’
JJ reaches one arm up to the tree branch above him, half swinging off it lazily until he can get off the phone and start to climb.
‘They just needed help packing shit up before the storm.’
‘Don’t they have grounds staff for that? You’re a busboy, JJ.’
JJ rolls his eyes, half tempted to just hang up on his best friend, why the hell is he pushing back on this so much? He thought it was a totally plausible lie.

He used the hand that was in her hair to roughly yank her head back. Not hard enough to hurt her, but enough to shock her just a bit. Her screaming stopped and her thrashing ceased but her eyes were closed.
“Eyes, Kie,” JJ whispered. He moved one of her hands around his throat so she could feel his pulse beneath her hands. He slipped one of his rings on the thumb that was around his neck and said again, “Kiara, give me your eyes.”
