Summary
Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.

———
Even at the worst of it. Even at the eleventh hour, when the weakest of them (James included) were driven round the wheel of breath by brute instinct alone, dead men with beating blood, Francis emanated the kind of muddy half-light that precedes the rising sun. His indefatigable will made manifest in the flesh.
“Don’t be cruel, James,” he is saying now. “I am fat, decrepit. My better days, if ever I had them, are long behind me.”
“Ever the curmudgeon. You’ve no idea how ... splendid you are. I, for one, think these are your finest days.”

Summary
“Lass, you’ve your hands half inside my shirt.” It could hardly be denied, as the evidence was presently that James’s hands were indeed both halfway inside Francis’s shirt, his nails scraping through hair and catching gently against pale skin. When they caught at the edge of Francis’s areola, he hissed between his teeth, his spine arching faintly, his head dropping back, back, back. “What is it you’re after?”
