‘’No Kaiser no, that’s not it!’’ Ness protests, ears flushing to the color of his hair tips, ‘’I did not say that, I only said—’’

Making his way past the kitchen, he peered out into the hallway, catching sight of a familiar cobalt blue in his peripheral. The phone in his hand fell to the floor.

Her nail brushes against his bottom lip, and he fights the urge to take the entire tip of her finger into his mouth. He thinks she might taste better than any cocoa or honey nougat carré ever could. Maybe a moccatine, or a pistache gianduja, or maybe just skin. Sweet, smooth, warm skin with the hint of sugary confection on her fingertips. “I came here because my old life was destroyed, and I was told Germany was where I could go to start over.”
“Oh, darling..” Alexis tuts sadly for him. “How wrong they were…”
