Peter is burning himself out like a candle or a fuse before their eyes, and yet Edmund steps in time and again to help him out of every mess he throws himself into. It’s upsetting Lucy. It’s frightening Mum.
And maybe, just maybe, it’s frightening Susan, too.
“You think I haven’t tried?” Edmund scoffs, and there’s something terribly resigned about his tone, his posture, the way he looks at her tiredly, then, across the board.
“We can’t let him keep doing this, Ed.”
“We’re not letting him do anything,” Edmund says. “It’s Pete. You know that.”

“Ask your question, Susan.” He says her name as tenderly as when he first crowned her for the Sun and the South in Cair Paravel that spring so long ago. She can’t quite remember the last time he called her Susan, not daughter or dear one or Gentle or Queen.
Susan wraps her hands around a chunk of mane each, feeling the warm weight of it settle in her palms, her bones. “Sometimes,” she whispers, “I feel like it would be easier if I could just—forget any of this wasn’t a dream. Don’t you think?”
“That,” says Aslan very solemnly, “is not for me to say.”

“Truth be told, I think I may be better suited as a scholar than a soldier,” Caspian sighs, picking at the freshly-administered bandages across his palm.
“Maybe that’s why I’m here, then,” Peter finds himself saying. Caspian’s fingers still, and he looks up at Peter questioningly. “I’ve never been the best student in the bunch, you might say.” He gets by well enough, but he’s always thought quicker with a blade in his hand. Sometimes it’s more like breathing than thinking, that’s how easy it is. Drawing Rhindon beneath what’s left of Cair Paravel was like waking up without realizing he’s been half asleep all along.
“I am glad,” Caspian says suddenly, not quite meeting his eye, “that the horn brought you here.” He pauses before adding, “All of you.”
Here is a secret, though poorly kept: Peter’s glad, too.
(or, peter pevensie, on wanting, and losing, and sometimes on having.)

“It must have been incredible,” Caspian says, tearing his eyes from the horizon to glance over at Peter, who still watches the tide come in below the crumbled edge of the terrace. “Your Narnia.”
“It was,” replies Peter, one nail tracing the grooves of the lion-pommel’s mane. He sounds wistful and melancholic and mournful all at once. “Trumpkin told us they’re calling it the Golden Age now, when we ruled. But back then it was just Narnia. I wish— well. I suppose I wish you could have seen it. I think you would have liked it.”
And Caspian, watching the sunlight dapple Peter Pevensie’s cheekbones, the sea breeze ruffling his hair—Caspian, gazing at a King who stepped right out of the stories his professor used to tell him, out of the Golden Age of Narnia itself; High King Peter the Magnificent, who came when Caspian called—thinks that what he’s seeing right now is more than enough.
(or, the kings and queens of old are not quite what caspian expected, high king peter most of all. apparently the feeling is mutual.)

“My uncle sent soldiers to kill me in my sleep. It is…difficult,” Caspian admits, brushing his thumb across the skin of Peter’s inner wrist, feeling him jump and shudder faintly, “to sleep there. When I remember.”
“You’re going to have to eventually,” Peter says, because even now it seems he retains his irritating habit of saying inconveniently truthful things, things Caspian wishes not to confront on his own. It’s another one of the things Caspian misses about him, along with his courage, his insight, his smile.
“I know,” he whispers, because he does. “But this is a dream.”
(or, caspian mourns, and caspian wishes, and caspian dreams.)

“It’s different,” Peter says, and regrets it at once. The best and only way to avoid losing an argument with Edmund (if, indeed, an argument is what this is—Peter’s not quite sure yet) is not to talk at all.
Bluntly, his brother says, “You should tell him.”
And all at once, Peter’s tired. Lion’s mane, he’s so tired. He’s weary right down to his bones. “Tell him what, Edmund?”
(or, five times someone noticed peter’s feelings for caspian, and one time caspian noticed his own.)

That’s the thing about Aslan: you’ve always got to say what you mean with him. He wants to be asked, Lucy told him once in confidence. She was right, of course.
“If I may,” Caspian begins, steadying himself as best he can, knotting his hands together behind his back so tightly his knuckles ache, “I should like to— to see Peter again, however that may be, if only for a moment. I would understand if it was not even five.”
(or, caspian has his five minutes in another world...but not at experiment house.)
