He’s seen her look tired before — burnt out, and disheveled. When she’d come back from closing the gate, he’d wiped the blood out from underneath her nose, crusted and dry. There were veins by her eyelids, blue and purple and visible under the unnatural paleness of her skin. She’d looked tired. But that was exhaustion. But this isn’t the same. This lingering cloud that’s been hovering over her all night — the weighty guilt of it in her face. This is new for her. This is defeat.
This scares him more.

The whole house is quiet, the echoes of Billy’s barbaric screaming long-since faded away, but when Mike closes his eyes and inhales deeply enough, he could swear he still smells the faintly tangy scent of whatever that gel was in El’s hair, the one that filled his lungs when he breathed her in. He can still feel the heat of her against him, the way her heart beat so hard and wild against his chest, the way her nails dug into his shoulders through his sweater when he’d hugged her as close and as hard as he could. He can still feel her, alive and breathing, real and there, even though it’s been a couple of hours and he’s had as many brushes with death in that time. The anxiety still bristling in his stomach roars and doubles over on top of itself, threatening to buckle his knees and bring him to the floor for a moment.
It’s the memory of those headlights flaring to near blinding proportions that keeps him steady on his feet. There’s no way that was anything but Eleven.

There’s nothing she could need that he wouldn’t now be ready to give. But Eleven hasn’t said a word about it outside of a quiet “I heard” and her apparent need to kiss to forget — She’s done nothing to hearten him or quell his fear that it might have been too little, too late.

“I need to talk to you.” This is probably the most they’ve talked about something other than school or chores in forever and they’ve barely even exchanged ten words. “About… everything.” This is important though, Nancy considers, so she powers through the urge to pull a dirty sock from the hamper and throw it at him just because.
It might feel like they have forever right now, but there’s a war raging outside. “I need you safe, Mike. The easiest way for him to get to El is through you, so I want you to be careful.”

Her sock clad feet slide up between them as she curls into a ball, and she rests her toes against his knees, stealing his natural warmth and lending him her own.
Another sneeze escapes before she can stop it, before she expects it to, and Mike is already holding out another tissue with a knowing grin.
“Wheeler,” Hopper’s voice rings through the doorway, “Keep your germs out of my house.”
