For the first time in a long time, there isn't an Apocalypse looming. The end of the world isn't upon them. It's pretty damn refreshing when Sam's tasks amount to translating a book for a fellow hunter. He'd been settled in to do exactly that, when the scent hit him like a bus.
Sam's left swimming in shock, his nose had to be paying tricks on him—
Dean going into heat means something went wrong. Maybe his meds expired or he got distracted during his 'nesting' phase, because there's no way this was his choice! ...Until Sam learns that it was.
Apparently, there's no time like the present (nothing to hunt, no people to save) and Dean points out: how long will this peace last? Plus, the Bunker's the safest place on Earth!
With Dean going out on a limb, taking a chance and showing some vulnerability, Sam decided to do the same thing. Even though he's worried about Dean's reaction, he owes it to him. Sam needs to just friggin say it before he loses the nerve.
It sure doesn't play out like he expected—it goes so much better. Both alpha and omega can tell their week together is looking like paradise. The Bunker may be the best thing that happened to them.

Ever since the Winchesters mutually confessed that yeah, being normal brothers wasn’t quite working for them, Dean’s been noticing things that he hasn’t previously allowed himself to think about. Things about Sam, specifically. Things that make it extremely difficult to focus during his day-to-day life.
There’s little things that come with their new relationship, of course- he’s allowed to stare openly, now, without being worried about getting caught, and it lets him admire Sam’s dimples, the way his hair curls slightly around his ears. The whole muscled length of him, the naturally toned look he’s gained from years of hunting. His eyes, and his nose, and his broad shoulders.
But of all things to fixate on, of everything he possibly could’ve picked- he can’t seem to stop thinking about Sam’s hands.
