Summary
She held his gaze for a long moment, and her expression softened from the stony, defensive look she'd worn since they left the Emerald City into one more neutral. Elphaba took a deep breath and said, “We need to talk.”
Fiyero nodded in agreement and replied softly, “We do.”
They looked at each other, both of them comparing the person they remembered from school against the one they observed now. Elphaba saw a more weary, serious, mature version of Fiyero than she recalled from Shiz. He had always been so kind back then; I hope that has not changed. Fiyero was concerned; he thought Elphaba seemed more tired and fragile than he'd ever seen her before. Then she asked him: “Why? Why did you commit treason against the Wizard back there?”

“Fiyero.” That's the second time he's used my name in the last few minutes; I'm scared... “Listen to me: you will have to be very, very careful with this. I'm afraid this is bigger, more serious than either of us realize...it's the Wizard we're dealing with here. What can you remember of the proclamation detailing Elphaba's 'crimes'?”
“Most of it was Madame Morrible calling her evil, twisted, wicked due to her skin color,” Fiyero said unhappily. Slowly, he continued: “She said Elphaba had stolen the Grimmerie. Now that part I could see being true...especially if she felt forced to do it because she thought it was being used for evil. But mutilating monkeys? No, I can't imagine Elphaba ever doing that on purpose.” He shivered.

Felin gave Fiyero a rueful smile and clap on the shoulder...wait, when had his baby brother grown so tall?...as they walked out to the courtyard where Feldspur was waiting, saddled and ready for the long ride to Shiz. “I know, don't worry...no offense taken. But they really will send you to the military academy if you get yourself expelled again. Hopefully you'll finally find the...passion, purpose...you've been searching for at Shiz?”
“Or maybe it'll pop up out of the forest as I'm riding by,” replied Fiyero dramatically, making a small leap as he said “pop up”. The brothers laughed, then embraced in farewell before Fiyero mounted up and rode out of the castle gates.

Summary
NOTE 09-06-2026: I have reworked/rewritten/re-edited "As Long As You're Mine"; it is now titled "Borrow the Moonlight" and part of my series "Dancing Through Life". I mainly wanted to correct some continuity errors with Fiyero's backstory in "Skimming the Surface" and break it up into chapters so it would fit better into the "Dancing Through Life" series. Besides renaming this, I've added a few more conversations between Elphaba and Fiyero in her refuge as well to the new version; I loved the idea of giving them all the time they needed to talk things out (or at least, more than they had) before shit hit the fan.
