It’s Ellie sucking on her thumb that first makes him suspect that something’s up.
He hasn’t known her that long, technically speaking–about two months in the QZ and nearing a month in the compound–but even in her earliest days of still being unsettled with them in Boston, she hadn’t been a thumb sucker. He only vaguely remembers pediatrician visits before and a quick visit to the little library in town reassures him (and Tess, who noticed the same thing) that thumb sucking isn’t uncommon in kids up to the age of 5.
