Deborah looks down at her from her desk chair and Ava feels a swell of something equal parts arousal, humiliation, and a guttural, instinctual trust.
“Hush, sweetheart, I'm trying to work,” Deborah chides, tucking Ava’s hair behind her ear before returning to her laptop keyboard. The nickname and the dismissal shoots straight between her legs and she has to remind herself to steady her breath and follow Deborah’s rules.
It should be an easy task, she doesn't even ask for much.

"Jesus," Ava muttered. This was not going well.

"Or," Ava snapped, "I can just walk out and let you bleed to death in this shitty casino with your clicker friends. Whatever floats your boat."
That earned her a scoff.

Twenty-six years into the apocalypse, and one year after her last interaction with another human being, Ava meets Deborah.
And maybe it has something to do with the fact that Ava hasn’t spoken to anyone in a year, but there’s something about Deborah that makes her feel like there might still be some fun left in their dead world.
