Summary
He slowly pressed his hand over Ao’nung’s heart, feeling its rhythmic beat beneath his palm. “You are strong, Ao’nung. Strong people admit when they are wrong. You are deserving of forgiveness.”
Ao’nung looked as if he was close to tears. He sighed and gently put his hand over Neteyam’s. “I want to believe you.”
Neteyam discovers that his first impression of Ao’nung might have been all wrong, and that maybe Awa’atlu could end up feeling like home.

Summary
After Lo'ak safely returns from being left outside of the reef, Neteyam goes for a walk on the beach and has a conversation with Ao'nung that sets him on a different path, and though he doesn't know it, saves his life.
(Basically I'm exploring the question: What character development would have needed to happen in order for Neteyam to avoid his death in the movie?)

Neteyam scoffed, standing to face the other male. Ao'nung grabbed his wrist, lifting the Omaticaya's arm and revealing the slender hand. "You are different. You're not like your brother. "
"We have the same parents," Neteyam replied, keeping his voice low and void of his rising fury. "My brother and I are the same."
"No," Ao'nung smirked, disagreeing. "Your brother is more like the sky people than you are. It shows even in the way he behaves."
"I told you to leave my family alone-" Neteyam warned, pulling his hand free from Ao'nung's loosened grasp.
"Or what?" Ao'nung's smirk never left his face. The Metcayina stepped closer, half expecting Neteyam to take a step back, but the dark blue skinned boy never did.

“That would be,” horrific, “Amazing.”
