Summary
The kitchen counters were already scrubbed, the faint scent of lemon cleaner lingering. The sugar jar was free of dust, its lid turned so the pattern faced forward. The meat for dinner was thawing on a plate by the sink, which had been rinsed and polished until no water spots showed. On the stove, the dish towel hung square over the handle. In the linen closet, the towel with the blue stripe waited on the second shelf, folded to hide the worn edge.
Suguru sat at the dining table, folding bills into their envelopes, when Megumi’s tea party suddenly broke into a scream.
