Summary
Laudna looks a little shy suddenly as she reaches into a pocket. “It’s a Ring of Thought Detection,” she says. “I think it—it mimics your powers.”
They’ve talked about this, laying atop wrinkled sheets, lazy and glowing and spent. What a shame, Laudna had murmured into Imogen’s ear, that there wasn’t a way to have the magic flow the opposite direction, so that she could know what Imogen wanted, pull inspiration from her mind. Imogen had shivered, then taken Laudna’s hand and dragged it down between her legs to show her what that thought did to her.
Does to her. She’s definitely turned on. Can feel the excitement jumping in her. But—
But Laudna thinks Imogen is perfect. Thinks she’s amazing. Thinks she’s wonderful. The problem is, she’s really not. And if Laudna looks into Imogen’s head, Imogen is certain that she’ll find out.

“I do,” Laudna says, sounding very nervous, and Imogen feels Laudna’s hand on her shoulder. The bed dips as she sits and Imogen can’t look at her. She can’t look at her. She can’t.
“Imogen, please listen to me. Letters said, she doesn’t want you like you want her. And I don’t know if that her meant me, but if it did”—Laudna swallows audibly—"If it did. It’s not true.”
OR: Evil FCG tells Imogen that Laudna could never want her. Laudna disagrees.

Summary
It's almost lonely, this new calm in Imogen's head. Usually at the market she'd be treated to Laudna's light, musical inner dialogue about the ripeness of fruits or the bread Zhudanna might like best, but instead it's just quiet. All Imogen gets is what Laudna shows on her face, and the words she says out loud. Words like you don't have to listen in to get my thoughts. I'll always share them willingly. You can just ask.
There's only one thing Imogen wants to ask right now. It's blaring in Imogen's mind like a temple bell, so loudly that even with the circlet she's sure Laudna must be able to hear it. And Laudna is looking at her so sweetly. Every moment they've been parted has made this all-consuming feeling worse, harder to pack away, and this could be her last chance to say it. Her only chance.
She has to say it. She has to ask.
"Can I kiss you?"
