“Hear me out. You are hungry, aren’t you?” J.C. looked at him, so kind and gentle, that Fitz slumped back down onto the pillow. “Do you have a place to go when we arrive?” Fitz was silent. “You said you’re a journalist?” The boy nodded. “I want you to work with me.” Fitz stared at him, struggling to keep with him.
“Sorry, I-“ Fitz stumbled over the words. He cleared his throat. “What was that thing last night? The thing I k-killed.”
“They have many names. Creature, entity, spirit, god, monster. You pick,” J.C. said with a casual shrug. “Not all of them are violent like that one was. Some are kind and helpful. They’ll even help you if you give them the right gifts.” J.C. smiled again. A strange chill ran down Fitz’s spine despite the warm coal heater in the cabin. “You see them?”
“Yes.”
“Since childhood?”
“Yes… W-We all did.”
