Summary
Lexi turned around, leaned down to grab a few boxes sitting on the front porch and looked up to find a pair of crystalline blue eyes fixed on her, a small, curious grin on the man’s face.
This mailperson was quite the departure from her expectations. His official-looking uniform, surely designed by the U.S. government to inspire immediate repulsion towards the Postal Service workers, somehow fit him. A short ginger-tinged beard offset a constellation of adorable freckles, and she noticed a long scar running on his scalp beneath a short buzz cut.
But it was the eyes that had her so transfixed. Kind and playful and eager to gaze upon her face, as if he’d been waiting to solve this riddle, too.
God, she recognized this feeling. Lexi had a crush on the mailman.

“No,” she replies, frowning. “I was trying to be a good sister. She asked me to come with her in case your brother was, like, a weirdo. Or a serial killer.”
He snorts again as he takes a seat beside her. “Aight.”
She watches him take a pull from the beer bottle, lips closing around the end. He’s kind of handsome, she thinks, even if he is wearing a beanie — they’re indoors and they live in Southern California.
He also seems like kind of a dick, so there’s that.

Settling against one of the light posts, Lexi takes a long sip of her drink and pulls her phone out to start scrolling her Tumblr. At least there no one will know she’s a complete loser who got ditched at the town carnival by her best friend, unlike Instagram or Twitter. A single AirPod rests in her ears as she scrolls aimlessly through fandom posts, liking some fic links from mutual's and reblogging others with enthusiastic tags about reading as soon as she gets a chance. She catches the wild flame out of the corner of her eye, but thinks nothing of it as she taps away at her phone until a large cloud of smoke engulfs her, dragging her back to reality just in time to hear the question suddenly aimed at her.
“Yo, you Rue’s friend, right?”
