The lump in his throat wasn’t unfamiliar—it was just another part of the job, like waiting in wings before a show. Still, the red carpet wasn't exactly his stage.

As he stepped forward, letting the spotlight catch him just right, the murmur of the crowd shifted like a ripple in still water. Cameras pivoted. Energy crackled.
