He hadn’t been a young man when the bombs dropped, and he wasn’t any younger now. By this point, he’d experienced pretty much every feeling there was to feel, and he had little use for them anymore. He was able to view most things—and people—with the cool apathy that the wasteland required. But the girl had done a good thing for him back at the Mart, and though that wasn't worth much out here, it was worth something. A bit of curiosity, maybe. Nothing more.
Curiosity, it turned out, had a funny way of lingering in the subconscious.
