Will released a shaky exhale, overwhelmed and hot all over. “I’m—I’m sorry, I—”
“Don’t,” Chance choked out, pressing their foreheads together. “Don’t say anything, or I’ll—fuck, I don’t even know. Just…tell me to stop.” Then quieter: “Please, or I’m going to do something insane.”
The summer of ‘87 was an eventful one, to say the least.

Summary
Will Byers is fifteen years old, and there is a monster living in his chest.
It's been there for awhile, over two years now. It was quiet for a lot of that, sleeping maybe, save for an occasional low, throaty growl rumbling beneath Will's heartbeat, or a provoked stretch in which the edge of its nails grazed lightly across Will's ribcage. But for the past few months, something has shaken the beast into emergence from its lengthy hibernation.
He's getting to know the monster well. If Will drew it, it would be a dark, bristled creature, clawed and fanged with green, green eyes.

It’s pouring rain and they have to bike home from school, both of them huffing and puffing and rapidly wiping their eyes to make sure they don’t crash into each other. It’s been about a month of careful avoidance and overly practiced politeness on both of their ends, dreading the inevitable conversation that’s to come about what happened in Mike’s bedroom.
Hey remember when we made out even though we’re both boys and we’ve been best friends since we were five and also you are dating my sister?
There’s just no way to bring that up casually in conversation.

“I couldn’t let him hurt you,” Will blurts out. He turns back to Mike now, and there’s a desperation in Will’s eyes that damn near takes Mike’s breath away. “When I… when I saw that demo about to attack you, I just… I just knew I had to do something. Anything. I… I couldn’t lose you.”
Warmth rushes to Mike’s cheeks. That same, fluttery feeling from before has returned with a vengeance, and there’s a dozen different thoughts swirling around in his mind. Will wanted to protect him. Mike.
It’s dizzying to even try to wrap his mind around.
