Summary
It hits Madara then, as he balances haphazardly on the windowsill of the hospital room, that the only thing separating him from Maguro is a thin sheet of glass. It’s not bulletproof, it’s not shatterproof—in fact, he could break it with a single flick of his wrist—and that is a terrifying thought.
And this is a terrible idea. Why is he even considering it? She doesn’t want to see him anymore—she made that clear when he left. He should leave now and spare them both the pain of reliving a childhood filled with the constant looming threat of death. Maybe he should start small; shoot her a text and ask for permission—provided she hasn’t blocked his number. Because Madara is a coward when it comes to the things that matter, and he knows that if he leaves now, he’s never going to close the widening gap between them. But that doesn’t change anything, so he turns to go.
“Hey. Don’t move.” The command is direct. Madara freezes, not making a sound, because even after all these years he would never deny Maguro anything. “I know you’re out there. Why don’t you stop hovering like a weirdo freak and come inside?”

Summary
“Eichi, I love you.” Wataru says firmly. There are no tricks, no dazzling accompaniments. Just Wataru, perched precariously on the window of Eichi’s hospital room, staring at him with determined eyes. “I am in love with you.”
Ah, Eichi thinks. This is a terrible, terrible thing. Not Wataru, of course, never Wataru. This is, quite literally, the stuff of Eichi’s dreams. Wataru, saying those words, stretching his hand out to Eichi. It seems too good to be real. Eichi should be leaping at this chance—and he might’ve, were he not confined to a hospital bed. But something about this just doesn’t feel real to him.
It could be the fact that, because he is not Wataru’s soulmate, Wataru cannot possibly be in love with Eichi.

“Ah, how foolish of me to expect you to forgive me so easily.” Wataru sighs. “You must have been so very bored, trapped in this dull room. And yet, I gallivanted happily whilst you were stuck, pining for freedom. I see your expression, and I wonder. If it would make you feel any better, dear Eichi, I have a gift for you.” He pulls out a box, decorated with a red satin bow. He opens it to reveal a cake, with the words forgive me? spelt out in creamy red icing.
“Wataru,” Eichi snaps, increasingly annoyed. “I’m not annoyed because you’re late, and I don’t want your gift. I want you to kiss me.”
Wataru squeaks and turns beet-red, flushed from embarrassment to the tips of his ears. If Eichi looks carefully, he can imagine steam emerging from Wataru’s head, like a smoking tea-kettle. “That’s—Well, I—”

He sways, feels the ground move unsteadily beneath his feet. His head is spinning, spinning, spinning—like a washing machine on the highest setting. His vision greys out for a second, then slides back, and he can see the barest hints of Aira’s terrified expression.
Before he drops like a puppet with his strings cut, he remembers mouthing one thing: Don’t tell Kaoru.

Merumeru. There’s a certain comfort in the name, because it belongs to “him” alone, invented and used in the absence of Kaname. Irritating, childish, but “his.” It tethers HiMERU somewhat. Rinne has always been that way – a tornado that pulls HiMERU into its eye, paradoxically stabilizing in its chaos.
