Summary
Ava is sitting by the window, eating goldfish crackers by the handful as she commentates on some drama happening down on the street, when Beatrice feels that tell-tale tightening in her chest and she - she knows.
She’s fallen enough times to know. She’s fallen hundreds, thousands of times by now - onto padded mats and concrete, off of buildings and into busy streets - but those have only been with her body, pressed and hardened and molded into service and discipline through pain and withholding. The number of times her heart has fallen is but a tiniest fraction of that of her body, not for lack of trying, not for lack of love - not because she lacks anything at all.

Sometimes, in her most delusional moments, she would believe that they would play with her, or read her a story, or laugh and tell her silly things about when she was a baby, and she would go to sleep with a happy smile on her face.
The human brain is a cruel thing, and even though she knew it would never happen, she couldn't help but hope and pray for it. The best birthday she had ever had was when they completely forgot about it, and she spent the day alone in the house, sitting on the stairs and waiting for her parents to come home and hoping it was actually a surprise. It never was. "

Because it turns out the Halo can want things now, sort of. Not the way a human would, with thoughts or motivation or articulable desires. The Halo wants things the way a tree wants water and shoves a taproot through flagstone to get it, which is all well and good for the tree, but less so for the idiot trying to keep her patio intact. Unfortunately for Ava, she’s both the idiot and the taproot. The flagstone is her dignity. The water – for reasons becoming rapidly and unavoidably apparent – is Beatrice.

“You’re just trying your best, Ava.”
“You’re too nice to me,” she answers.
She’s mostly joking, but she’s also expressed more than once, late, when Bea’s eyes are the only light in their bedroom, that nobody has ever been this nice to her. Beatrice knows that feeling – knows what it’s like, to wonder if anybody ever will be again. And part of her knows, too, that it’s been so long since she let anybody in this far, since she’s ever let herself be this nice to anybody for the sake of it. Since she gave in to the impulse.
So she says, “Don’t say that.”
She says it, and she means it. Because she wants Ava to know that even if she never got ice cream with her mother, this fact doesn’t feel so important anymore. It couldn’t – not when she’s getting ice cream with Ava now and has been for the last few weeks, not with the way the sun sets behind Ava, a haloed glow not of her own making just this once.
Not when Ava is so beautiful that sometimes it makes Beatrice forget who she is – or maybe she’s just beginning to remember.

Summary
Ava rolls over, shutting her brain off, and very carefully presses the palm of her hand on Beatrice’s waist.
Beatrice tenses immediately, a sharp intake of breath filling the otherwise quiet bedroom.
A few seconds pass with nothing and Ava starts to pull away, an apology on her lips, when Beatrice grabs her wrist. It’s so fast that Ava hardly registers what happened, but suddenly, she’s being pulled to the other side of the bed.
Ava lets it happen, helps, and now she’s hovering over Beatrice. She’s so close she can see the shine in her eyes, how wide they are and she can see them flicker to her lips and back up.
Bea’s made this move, it’s her turn now. Ava leans forward, giving Beatrice a chance to turn her away.
When she doesn’t, it’s game over. Their lips meet and every functioning part of Ava’s brain that might tell her there will be consequences to this completely disappear.
The world could set fire tonight and Ava would keep kissing her as the apartment collapsed around them.
