“Are you sure?” She manages to croak out, voice wavering a little, and Nancy finally turns around. She’s grinning, a coy little smile Robin’s never had directed her way. Her heart skips in her chest as Nancy nods.
“Yeah.” She confirms and Robin’s falling all over again. “Go to prom with me, Buckley.”
Well. How the fuck is she supposed to say no to that?
“Ok.” She breathes, eyes stuck somewhere between Nancy’s nose and mouth. Eye contact feels too much right now. Feels like she’d burst and burn and melt into a gleeful little supernova if she even tried. Because Nancy Wheeler just asked her to prom. Nancy Wheeler, who she’s definitely a little more than a little in love with, who knows her and loves her better than anyone else ever has, who has saved her life and slept in her bed and who is probably her best friend (other than Steve), has asked her to prom and Robin feels like she might actually die.
“Pick me up at seven?”
“Sure.” Robin nearly whispers and Nancy smiles even wider.
Robin’s head spins with it all the way home.

Robin reaches for her. She slides a tentative hand towards her, palm up, knuckles skimming over Nancy’s thigh, the tips of her fingers twitching ever so slightly.
Nancy stares. And stares.
She wants to tell Robin, don’t offer your hand to me. If I hold it now, I might never let go.
She wants to tell herself, religion has taught you to be merciful. So be that. Let her go. Don’t take her hand when you might rip it clean off.
