Summary
The hand holding his own was one he’d remember from anywhere. Polites pulled him back to safety and Odysseus knew he’d let him. He’d let Polites lead him to the edges of the world if that’s what he wanted.
The screams got louder as he grew further from them, like they were urging him to follow, to jump. But no, Polites needed him to stay. Polites needed him to live. Polites needed him to come back to Ithaca for his sister and her son, unprotected and alone. Polites needed him to be strong.
Odysseus couldn’t take it anymore. He shouted for the name he hadn’t since he’d left Polyphemus’s island. Since he’d stopped believing the gods ever cared about what was right in the world.
“Athena!”

Or in which Odysseus of Ithaca lost his husband early in his voyage back home, and spends the rest of the journey trying to reunite with his beloved as his crew die one by one.
