He swallows, suddenly sick with wanting, terrified at the prospect of never getting to have that life, the one that’s supposed to have started already, that maybe should have started a long time ago. Loving loudly, like he’s always been prone to do, but without the notion of secrecy or consequence. Loving Phil, the way Phil has always deserved.

Even like this, standing there, frozen, panic etched onto his features as he tried, for the third time, to open the door of the washing machine before the cycle has run out, Phil could just eat him up.
"It's not finished yet," he tells the boy gently, making sure to keep his voice quiet, because if someone caught him not knowing what to do and freaking out about it in any public situation, he'd be a right mess too. "See the number on the display? That's the minutes the cycle has left. It's another fifteen."
In a world without the internet, the universe can't stop coming up with other outlandish ways for Dan and Phil to keep running into each other.
