He pushes the control, the jealousy, the excessive determination, the ownership and all the other apparently gross qualities of himself down and keeps them locked away in order to put that energy into work, school, and life, neglecting his romantic desires and sex life for years. He feels okay, stable, able to control himself and the more vivid parts of him. Until he meets Viktor. And until Viktor pops a rather unusual question that allows Jayce's monsters to rear their ugly heads.

Summary
Situationships can be hard. For Viktor, falling for Jayce hadn’t been what he anticipated when they started whatever this was.
Viktor felt stuck in a loop—in that liminal space where they weren’t officially together but close enough for it to hurt like they were. He was tired from all the emotional faking from Jayce in the weeks leading up to their separation. How he grew quieter in between sips of whiskey. His smiles never quite reaching his eyes. As if he were going through the motions.
Nonetheless, Viktor clung to the idea that if he maybe planned the trip perfectly, Jayce would be moved enough to turn something temporary into something lasting.
