Hua Cheng did not have a good childhood.
For Hua Cheng's birthday, Xie Lian decides that Hong-er needs better memories.
“Good morning, San Lang gege, rise and shine! It’s your birthday! Happy birthday!”
Hua Cheng grins widely, hoisting little Xie Lian up like a kitten and examining the adorable face. Little Xie Lian smiles at him beatifically.
“Gege is so cute! Did you mask your presence? I didn’t notice you at all.”
“En!” The small face nods enthusiastically. “Lian-er wants San Lang gege to rest more! This smaller form has little spiritual capacity, so it was easy to mask the rest.”
Hua Cheng tosses the little prince in the air, making the boy squeal in delight.
“Is this my birthday present? I finally understand why gege was so enamoured with my child skin. Gege is too adorable.” Hua Cheng pinches little Xie Lian’s cheek gently.

When he swapped He Xuan and Shi Qingxuan’s fates, he didn’t expect the former to haunt them as a Supreme. Pei Ming has always said, with the affected air of a wise, battle-weary general, that the best laid plans only last until the first arrow leaves the bow. Shi Wudu has always scoffed at the saying. He is proud to be a meticulous planner.
Not meticulous enough in this case, it seems.
Shi Wudu personally descended to ensure that He Xuan is dead, but he failed to account for the afterlife.
If they make it out alive, Shi Wudu would not be so careless again.

The convenient thing about his version of immortality, Xie Lian thinks, is that every time his heart stops, his open wounds heal faster. He doesn’t wake until whatever damage stopped his heart is mended.
His body heals around the dowel, like it’s some perverse form of giant earring pierced through his heart.
This is his punishment for failing the Yong’an royal family, just like he failed his own. Just like he failed Wu Ming.
