Carisi shrugged, glancing over at Barba. “I’m fine with sharing the bed,” he said. Barba looked back at Carisi carefully, the corners of his mouth twitching. “What?” Carisi asked, suspicious.
“Trying to decide if I’d rather spend $500 on an Uber ride home or share a bed with you.” Carisi rolled his eyes so hard that Olivia winced, but Barba added, somewhat reluctantly, “But I figure it’s one night. How painful can it possibly be?”
“You’ll find out when I kick your shins repeatedly,” Carisi muttered under his breath.

Barba’s eyes met his across the table, a soft look setting in as he took a large gulp from his drink, and Sonny felt his stomach flutter briefly. It was a look he thought he’d caught in passing, but whenever he tried to find it, it had already gone, leaving him to wonder if it had ever really been there in the first place. And yet there it was, plain as day, and Sonny felt his shoulders relax as he looked into those calming, gentle green eyes.

Olivia sends Carisi, who has a massive crush on Barba, over to see if he can help Barba prep for the Carl Rudnick trial. By the time he gets there Calhoun is already in Barba’s office trying to hack out a deal. Carisi steps in just in time to hear her make the comment about Barba’s migraines. Carisi senses that there is more to the story so he asks Barba about it. At first Barba deflects the question but Carisi presses him a little and he tells Carisi about what he considers to be his most embarrassing professional moment.

The worst kind of tension between them is always made up of uncomfortable silence and a distinct lack of eye contact, an inability to look at each other when they’re at their most vulnerable, and damn if Rafael doesn’t bring that vulnerability out of him more than Sonny would like. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, just a remind of how fragile his heart is in Rafael’s hands.

It was as though a bolt of lighting shot through the storm hanging about Sonny's head when Rafael was escorted into the courtroom. His heart clenched violently, and his hands began to tremble. Rafael, for his part, looked impressively calm, as blank an expression as one could hope for under the circumstances on his face, with a hint of anger simmering below the surface. He was ushered to his seat at the defense's table, and only turned around for a moment to nod gratefully to his family, and then his gaze met Sonny's, and he froze.

There's still so much Rafael and Sonny have yet to experience together, but the federal charges leveled against the A.D.A. could signal the end of their young relationship.

Barba takes it and looks at Carisi questioningly, running a thumb over the small, silver medal, warm from Carisi's skin. “It’s a Saint Dominic medal,” Carisi says. “Doesn’t really protect against anything but my ma got it for me when I graduated from the Academy. Said it’d keep me safe.” He shrugs. “Worked so far.”
“Carisi—” Barba starts, but Carisi shakes his head and doesn’t even let him get his protest out.
“I’ll sleep better at night knowing you’ve got it,” he says with a small, strained smile. “Please.”
