Summary
“You wrote that song. You put it out there for the whole world to hear. So what was it, really? Revenge?”
“I wanted you to know that I knew. That I wasn’t stupid or naive about what happened between us. I wanted you to know that I understood exactly what I was to you.”
"And what was that, Daisy?" There's an edge to it. Like he's daring her to say it out loud.
She stands. He doesn't step back, and she doesn't expect him to. They've always been like this, drawn together even when they're fighting. She won’t let him look away.
"Your favorite mistake."

Summary
"Now he can’t escape the faint music seeping through his walls the past three nights. The low hum of the bass is just barely perceptible but enough that he can feel the vibration in his bones. The melodies floating in the air, teasing him like a half-remembered dream that he can't quite grasp. What he hears most clearly are the screams from the crowd as each song comes to an end, a muffled roar that rolls over him like a far-off thunder.
He shifts positions again and tries not to think about who they’re cheering for."

Summary
"The song– it needs something more," she says as the car begins its ascent into the hills. "Something we won't find in the studio.”
"And we'll find it in Topanga at midnight?"
“That’s the idea.”
The air changes instantly as they leave the coast, the salty breeze replaced by the scent of dust and sage. Darkness deepens under the canopy of trees lining the winding road. He risks another look at Daisy. There’s a small, enigmatic smile playing on her lips. She knows she’s leading; she knows he’s following. And the unnerving part, the part that makes his pulse race with something that feels dangerously like anticipation, is that he is following. Giving in. Just for this moment, this detour, he lets the invisible current pull him forward into the dark. And a traitorous part of him, the part he usually keeps locked down tight, doesn't want to find his way back just yet.
