    Summary

    “Can’t you say it back?”

    Verity’s voice came, now— from right in front of him— as familiar as ever.

    Still, his heartbeat remained a shrill alarm bell, ringing painfully in his head.

    “Just once, Mob?”

    Mob flinched away violently when cool fingertips grazed his cheek, but Verity’s hand went with him, his touch remaining disturbingly gentle;
    and his fingers, as they curled under Mob’s chin and lifted, were their normal size.

    Still, his eyes remained stubbornly shut. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t breathe.

    Verity was… a monster, right? He was unpredictable, and selfish, and often destructive in his desperation. His fingers, contorted to spindly claws, could sink through Mob’s ribcage with the slightest, careless squeeze.

    “Mob.”

    Mob’s heart hammered in his throat, choking him of his voice. He couldn’t speak.

    But… right now.

    Why did he sound so…?

    “Won’t you even just…” Verity’s voice finally broke off into something raw. “…look at me?”

    Or: Mob and Verity have very different interpretations of what it means to say you “love” someone, and to trust them enough to say it back.
