I’m looking at her, which is how I notice her picking the peach slices off the melted ice cream and eating them, one by one, with her fingers. She closes her eyes, and I wonder if we’re stuck in the same memory. I could live in it forever, I could, but I need to stop clinging to the past.
“Belly?”

“If you need somewhere to stay while looking for a place of your own, I have a spare room.”
(or: 3 times Conrad watches Belly eat peaches, and one time where they eat them together.)

And so Laurel knows, long, long before it ever happens, when it begins to end.

"Grandpa Haymitch! Wake up!"
"Happy birthday, Grandpa Haymitch!"
