Summary
"Mikael?"
"Mmm?"
"Why is your pillow fort still up?"
Mikael lifts his head and blinks blearily at the pillow fort, which, unlike similar structures constructed by most kids of his age, looks like an actual fortress made out of beddings.
"I thought we agreed that you'd tear it down before our bedtime story," Trant chides. "Come on, let's put these away--"
The pillow fort snores.
----
Trant reads a bedtime story to his son. They both stay up slightly past their bedtime.

Summary
Early morning sunlight streams through the glass ceiling of the Lausanne Aerodrome. Outside the arrivals gate, a small blonde head towers over the crowd and adjusts the hand-binoculars around its eyes.
“See anyone yet?” a voice below him rasps.
“Nuh-uh,” Mikael says. He drops his hands and looks down. “What if he missed his flight?”
“I don’t think so,” Jean replies, not unkindly. “He was about to board when he called last night, remember?”
---
Jean and Mikael pick someone up from the aerodrome. Happiness ensues.

“That wall you punched,” Trant asks. “How sober was it?”
“It was sober,” Jean says. “Incredibly sober. *Fantastically* sober. In fact, it wouldn’t stop telling everyone how sober it was. So I punched it.” He flexes his fingers against Trant’s palm. “In the goddamn face.”

Summary
"On a bright March morning, the morning of the 12,410th day since he swam across the ocean while his friends—the sweetest, most courageous people in the world—screamed and burned and died behind him, the Deserter crawls out of bed and makes himself a mug of coffee."
The world turns. The Deserter watches.
