“Your Royal Highness.” Alex bows at the neck, not far enough to hide the dimple that pops out when he grins. His tongue rolls whiskey-warm around his accent; there’s more than a hint of the American South in it, and Henry has the distinct impression Alex is actively working to smooth it out. Then he looks up, his smile widening into something altogether more devastating, and god, Henry isn’t sure he can deal with this right now—
“I’ve really been looking forward to meeting you.”
And that is, officially, more than Henry can cope with. He opens his mouth, fully intent on begging Shaan to get him out of here, now, except… that’s not what comes out.

Alex trails off as Nora leans over to whisper something in June’s ear that causes her to laugh and fully turn her attention to Nora.
Pez, upon hearing the laughter of his goddess, also turns to be included in their conversation. Bea takes this time to pick up her phone and look through her notifications, then notes that most of their drinks are empty so she offers to get them refills.
He has, once again, successfully lost his audience.
It shouldn’t hurt so much, not anymore. Alex is pretty used to this.
They’ve never cut him off or spoken over him, it’s more subtle. It’s getting up for a bathroom break or whispering to each other or tilting phone screens to share a meme while he’s talking and should, theoretically, have their undivided attention. It’s always something.
It shouldn’t hurt.
He’s used to it.
It’s not personal, they say.
But it only happens to him.

Alex is used to being tuned out by his friends. Then, there’s Henry, all blue eyes and attentive. Alex sort of loves him.

Summary
There’s no question that Henry is the love of her little brother’s life. He’s perfect for him, if June’s being honest: handsome, calm, generous, genuine. He’s even got a pretty good sense of humor underneath all of the etiquette.
The only problem is that she’s never heard of a Henry Fox before; hadn’t even known that Alex finally figured that part of himself out; and the only problem is that she’s met him by accident in the middle of a hospital waiting room, with her brother's life in an unknown limbo on the other side.

Summary
The weight of it hits Alex unexpectedly. Henry had been so scared anyone could find out he’s gay, he hadn’t even considered the name he wanted for his dog safe. And like vultures, they had outed him at the first opportunity anyway. The thought makes anger spike in Alex's chest, makes him wish he could fix this for Henry somehow.

Or life might have thrown a curveball at Henry but a little talk about dogs changes everything for the better.
