“No, mate. No one has caught my eye, I don’t fancy anyone here. I’m not interested in anybody. I’m just here for some drinks and fun, that’s it,” Nick replied.
Oh fuck. Charlie felt bile rise in his throat as disappointment washed over him in a crushing force, tightening his chest.
So that was it. It was too good to be true, Charlie thought. Nick only talked to him because he felt pity for him. Or he wanted to play with his feelings. He wasn’t actually interested.
“Yes, Nick, I heard you,” Charlie laughed hollowly, “Don’t you think you didn’t hurt me. I really thought you’d liked me back and I felt so stupid, I-”
“Charlie!” Nick interrupted him, sounding so urgent and desperate, Charlie immediately stopped talking. He glared at him but motioned for him to continue with a jerk of his chin.
“Charlie, you got it all wrong, fuck, you have no idea!”
