The boy moves quietly, he shows up when needed and vanishes when not. He scrapes mud off boots and blood off hilts. He clears ashes from the campfires before dawn and stacks kindling without being told. You catch yourself watching him. Some of the men start to call him the ashen lad due to the ash and dirt always peppering his face.
