“Are you out of your Goddamn mind?” Illusion-Eddie says, making that sound that’s halfway between a huff and a click of his tongue; the sound he makes when he’s annoyed, or when Richie’s just said something he thinks is really stupid, like last week when they’d been chatting on the phone for an hour and he’d said it should have been me, and Eddie had been mad. So mad. Richie hadn’t heard him that mad before, not even when they’d been dragged all the way back to Derry to possibly die.
“Probably,” Richie says weakly. He has one hand still curled around the edge of the door from where he’d ran over in his haste to open it, the other leaning his entire weight against the door jamb. It’s starting to shake. “The fact that I’m hallucinating right now proves that, right? That can’t be, like, something a person in their Goddamn mind would do.”

There’s maybe an element of truth in that which sends an electrifying shiver roaming along Richie’s spine, a fist closing tightly around his erratically beating heart for a moment, releasing on a breath that is far too audible in the quiet of the car. Acid burns its way up his gullet and he swallows it back down laboriously, clenches his eyes shut against the sudden onslaught of visceral emotion. Whiskey sour breath; an icy certainty that you will never be warm again; the fear of forgetting at odds with the pain of remembering.

“Bill needs me, Richie.” Mike’s voice is gentle but firm, like that makes any sense.

The stretched, yellowing piece of tape along the side reads “Prom 1994,” and when a cold, unadulterated shiver goes through Eddie’s body at the sight of the words, at the flood of memories that overflows him, he shoves it straight back under the loudly patterned t-shirt on top. Unfortunately, Bev sees him, and snatches the tape back.
“Oh my god,” she says, pressing the tape flat under her nail, “is this really our prom video?”
