Summary
The boy studied Jayce’s face and then continued. “You and I are scientists,” he said. “We deal in facts. And the fact of the matter is that you have much more to lose than you have to gain from death. You can call it fate if you wish, but I disagree. I think you are here because, on some level, you know you are not done yet.”
Jayce gaped open-mouth wordlessly at him. He just smirked and stood, grabbing his cane in one hand and snatching his notes out of Jayce’s lap with the other.
“Just my thoughts,” he said, eyes glinting. He waited for Jayce to say something, and when he didn’t, he turned and started to walk away. He walked back across the hall to his bed just to grab his bag of things and start out the exit. It wasn’t until he was near the door that Jayce recovered his voice.
“Hey, wait,” he called.
The boy turned. “Yes?”
“I don’t even know your name,” was all Jayce could think to say.
He looked at Jayce with that same expression form before, a mix of confusion, satisfaction, and something unidentifiable. Then he grinned. “It’s Viktor.”

He can make it another hour. It’s only an hour. Gerard has got to get used to long drives, if he’s going to try and find somewhere to live. Mary’s ghost followed him so far, and she might yet follow him down the way to DC. He’d had three blissful days of rest before she found him, screaming about what he had done to her. It took him another week to get going, to find a car and leave.
She hasn’t found him yet. But Gerard doesn’t know how long that will last. He doesn’t want to stop and find out.
