    Summary

“We’ll have to stay here,” Mr Hayward said, his voice just barely loud enough to be heard over the roar of the wind that still raged beyond the mouth of the cave they had found shelter in, “until the storm calms a bit.”

    Summary

It was under duress that Mary ended up going to Tom’s poetry night.

This had all started in Professor Gardiner’s office at the start of term. See, she hadn’t gone looking for love that day. After 26 years of it seemingly missing her and her alone, Mary had pretty much given up on love and all its byproducts (sweaty palms, butterflies, etc.).

Only the Professor wasn’t there. Instead, Mary went and lost her heart to a tall man with curly hair, whose glasses were crooked on his face, and was completely unattainable.

    Summary

Mary found herself rather taken by those few lines, and breathed out quickly to steady herself. It was much less the content of the verse, she thought, and much more the intensity and sincerity of Mr. Hayward’s voice. Something in them made her chest grow warm, made her heart beat faster as if trying to escape. She glanced across the room again, locating the Gardiners talking to an older couple, and Ann still talking to Mr. Powell. No one was watching them, which meant no one noticed how flustered Mary must have seemed. Except, of course, Mr. Hayward, who had kept his eyes on her the entire time he spoke.
