Summary
Jean is something of a light sleeper. It is for this reason that, thankfully, he manages to get to his phone before its ringing wakes the entire house and becomes an ordeal.
“What happened?” His hands are shaking. In the Nest, it never would have been so easy to throw him off. California is making him weak.
There’s a low gasp on the other end.
“Kevin?” Jean hisses. “What happened?” He presses a hand hard against his chest and feels the quick thrum.
There’s another hitch in Kevin’s breathing. “Jean,” is all he says.
__
When Kevin has a nightmare and wakes to an empty dorm, there's only one person he can call. Jean isn't nearly as annoyed about it as he wants to be.

Summary
Andrew follows her line of sight to Neil’s crumpled form, and then another thought manages to clear the fog.
She intends to finish the job. The knowledge of this hits him harder than the blow to his shoulder.
Adrenaline dumps all at once in a flood through Andrew’s veins, dousing him like a bucket of water. It eclipses the pain entirely and fries his nerves into numbness. His pupils dilate, swallowing hazel with black, and he relinquishes his body to the base of primal instinct.
or: The Fight, from Andrew's point of view.

Summary
“It’s dead already,” Nathan states, wiping down a kitchen knife in slow, languid movements. The cook knows to make himself scarce when the Butcher’s in a mood like this. “It won’t last six months out of the womb.”
“It’s a Hatford.” She reminds him, leaning against the counter. Then, like peeling the skin from her shoulders; “It’s a Wesninski.”
*
Mary Hatford loved her son. This did not make her a good mother.
