Batman had seen children before, children that had lost everything, especially in the flood. The Riddler's descriptions of his nights in the system would haunt the nights. Maybe it was because he hadn't come to the circus as Batman. Not as Bruce Wayne either. But this time, as he looked at the boy in his blue eyes, he couldn't hide behind the mask.

Summary
“You don’t have to go if you don’t want to,” Bruce reminds the child sitting next to him gently. The limo turns a corner, and Dick exaggeratedly throws himself into Bruce’s side, giggling. Since they’ve been playing this game the entire drive to the gala, Bruce knows his role is to let out a patented sigh and hoist Dick back into a sitting position, trying to look stern and failing.
“I wanted to come, B. Besides, Alf said it was my job to make sure you didn’t leave after 10 minutes.”
