“What is it?” Will asked, flopping down on the couch as Mike avidly rifled through a cardboard box near the TV.
“You’ll… see,” He answered belatedly, sounding a little bit far away. A beat passed before he finally pulled out a black VHS box featuring a skull and bold, red lettering on the front. He held it up triumphantly. “I know you’ve wanted to watch it since it came out.”
Will’s face broke into a grin as he read the title. “Is it…”OR: Mike has a surprise for Will. Well, two surprises.

It takes a moment for his eyes to adjust, blinking away some droplets of rain. He spots it then, writhing movement all the way down against a far wall, becoming clearer as he steps closer. The back of a figure, barely visible in the moonlight, hunched over a shivering mass. A man pulling meat from bone like a feral beast.
It's a lurid, dizzying scene. He can't look away.

Summary
Mike recalls the brief interaction he had this morning in the hallway for perhaps the hundredth time. Maybe his friends can help. Help with what exactly, Mike doesn’t know— but something has been bugging him and he needs to get to the bottom of it.
“Hey, do you guys know that kid that wears all black? Chain belt? Eyeliner?”
“The gay kid?” Dustin supplies.
Oh, that’s right. Mike knew he had heard about him somewhere. He’s kind of famous around school. Well, him and his boyfriend. Even with it being 2006, they’re still the only openly gay people at the school.
Mike nods. “Yeah, I guess. I ran into him this morning. Literally, like we collided.”

Mike has a run-in with Will Byers, the school’s so-called “gay kid”. He takes it upon himself to befriend him, and quickly learns about Will’s relationship troubles with his boyfriend Matt. Along the way, Mike struggles with his identity, and Will struggles with his self-worth.

Summary
Mike ignores the bilious feeling that swims in his gut as he scoops fruit punch into their cups, his mind tortuously replaying that girl’s hand sliding over Will’s shoulder while he does. He shoves the mental image away.
Steve’s words ricochet in his mind. Carpe diem. Seize the fucking day. So stupid.
Then again…
(Or: Mike and Will have always walked the thin line between friendship and something more. A little encouragement goes a long way.)

“That speech…it wasn't about El, was it?” His voice was hushed, like it was the end of the world if anyone heard.
Will didn’t look at Mike either. He tried to hold in his tears, which just seemed to flow harder after Mike’s question. Will covered his face with both of his hands as he whispered, “I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. It's so stupid, I never should have said anything.”
