Usually, scammers don’t leave voice notes, just long messages pretending to be his mum, daughter, father and in a rare case, his girlfriend. He twists sideways to the drawers beside him to grab his earphones, plugging them in and swiping the message open.
Naturally, he clicks on the profile picture without hesitation, only to feel a pit open up in his stomach—a sensation so ambiguous that Chan can’t quite tell if it’s excitement or dread. It’s a studio, bathed in an intense red glow, filled with equipment Chan doesn’t recognise, and a solitary microphone peeks out from the side, silver and black.
It’s 30 minutes long. He presses the play button.
“Hello.”
