Yuna slides a folder on the table closer, pulling out two packets of paper. She’d gone all out with the contracts. Mainly, Shane suspected, to ease his nerves about the lines of the relationship. Plus, she was always nothing if not prepared.
She hands one contract to Shane, then another to Rozanov. “As a reminder, this is not legally binding. If either of you wants out early, can’t meet obligations, or wants to change things down the line, that is perfectly fine, and we can work with that. This just lays out the exact timeline of the relationship,” she begins, “down to the start and end dates."

"What?" Ilya mumbles, trying hard to keep his eyes open. He knows they'll have an entire day tomorrow — they both had an off day following their game, so they took advantage of it — but he still wants to pack in as many conscious seconds as possible before they're separated again.
"Nothing," Shane whispers, eyes like chocolate in the warm light of the lamp. "You're so pretty."
Ilya's eyebrows furrow, only to be quickly smoothed over by Shane's finger.
"No," Ilya hums. "That is you."

Summary
Having a child is like having a second heart beating outside of your body.
You carry them, and you hold them in your arms for the very first time, and you soothe them when they cry. You protect them, and keep them safe, and you try and instil them with all the skills and attributes they need to succeed, to thrive, to be happy. You do that for as long as you can…as long as they will allow you. And then you let them go.
You send them out into the world, and hope with everything in you that it doesn’t break them.
