    Danny had thought it might, thought if he could just get through the first few days after Steve left—maybe the first week or two—he’d be fine. He’d make himself coffee in the mornings, wince as he stretched his arm too far thanks to the gunshot wound that was still healing. He’d set the mug in the sink, limp to the living room, call Grace, call Charlie, and convince himself and everyone else that the ache wasn’t loneliness. Just recovery. Nothing more.
