Глаза Эдди встречаются с глазами Бака, и, в то время как он паникует, Бак так старается не смеяться, что в уголках его глаз собираются слёзы. Толпа, должно быть, увидела это и неверно истолковала, подумав, что Бак охвачен эмоциями, потому что они воркуют в ответ.

Charles laughs, trying to let out some of the rush that he feels at coming up with a truly mint idea. “Come on, mate, it’ll be brills! We’ll show these old white guys how far behind on the times they are, and they’ll either be forced to change the rule or we can drag their names through the mud.”

Summary
The first time Charles called Edwin mate, it was because he didn’t know his name. It just slipped out, like it always did, but it didn’t feel quite right. The last person he’d called mate had just shoved him in a freezing lake and threw rocks at his head.
But this boy didn’t seem like the sort who’d hurt an innocent kid just because he was from another country. He had a posh voice and kind eyes, and Charles didn’t feel self conscious while explaining why he’d defended the other kid whose name he barely knew.

He could drop his glass on the concrete. Or yell fire! convincingly enough to buy him enough time to run. He could make himself throw up, or pretend to faint, or just make a break for his truck and drive it directly into the ocean.
