LSD mainly affects the brain’s serotonin system. It binds to specific serotonin receptors and overstimulates them. This changes how the brain processes sensory information, so normal perception becomes distorted. Colors may look brighter, shapes may move, time can feel slower or faster, and thoughts can become unusual or very intense. It also reduces activity in brain networks linked to the sense of self, which can cause “ego dissolution,” meaning a person may feel less separated from their surroundings.
