    “Brand!”

    Brand sucked in a breath. It felt almost like someone had placed a hand on his shoulder, with just the barest hint of sensation to the point where Brand wasn’t sure he hadn’t imagined it. But the voice calling his name. It sounded a lot like—

    “Brand, look at me, please. Not at—not at my body. At me. Please.”

    Brand is the sole survivor of the fall of the Sun Court, but maybe he didn't lose as much as he thinks he did.
