Summary
There's a coat strewn on the porch outside the door and it catches his attention long enough that he steps off the doormat and falters.
Brand is standing in the yard, practice sword in his hand except that it's not a practice sword at all, it's live steel. There are bodies lying in the grass around him, stained crimson. They're small - children, not adults - and Rune can't breathe.
"Brand?" he whispers. Brand turns to look over his shoulder, his eyes cold like Rune has never seen them before.

A lot of things change after the disaster in the Westlands. Rune is getting courted. He has a teenager to somehow see through to adulthood. Eyes are swiveling back to the son of the fallen Lord Sun, which is hardly what he wants, but their jobs keep money flowing into Half House, and that's good enough.
The only anchor in Rune's life is the one he's always had: Brand, ready and willing and able to go to war.

Brand provides it, as always. “We are not going to boarding school. We will run away. You will never find us.”
Their new guardian, aka Anton, aka the Tower, does not look impressed. Or in any way swayed.
“Well,” he says, his voice infuriatingly calm in the face of the two defiant teenagers standing in front of him. “Then I suppose it’s a good thing your new school has more security than the Crown Jewels.”
And, okay, Rune knows this is a serious discussion and the last thing he wants is to be shipped off to boarding school, but the Tower said Crown Jewels and that’s clearly an opening for a joke.
So, he opens his mouth to make one.

Rune is getting angry and freaked out that shit is going missing- the first drawing Corbie ever made for him, a photo of him and the Tower, his mother’s cameo, his wedding ring- and no one seems to know what the fuck he’s talking about. He gets into a shouting match with Addam and Brand about it. “I don’t know what the fuck you two are doing but it’s not fucking funny- stop pretending you don’t know what I’m talking about! My mother’s cameo sigil! My godsdamned wedding ring!”
The next morning, he goes to Addam to apologize for shouting, and Addam apologizes too. Rune says, “Now I need to find Brand and say sorry to him too. He’s not gonna let me off the hook so easily though-“ Addam is giving him this look of worried concern so Rune is like, “Oh for fucks sake- what now?”
Addam says, “Who… is Brand?”
