Summary
“You said yes.”
“What?” Jean asks, half in a daze.
Jeremy swallows. “You said yes. To Allison. When she asked if you’re going to marry me.”
This seems to get Jean’s attention. “Of course I said yes.”
“That means you want to,” says Jeremy. “You want to marry me.”
“Jeremy.” Jean is looking at him as if he is stupid. And, well, perhaps Jeremy is a little stupid. “We have been together for eight years.”
Truthfully, Jeremy has been thinking about his and Jean’s wedding since his fifth year at USC.

Summary
Jeremy doesn’t need to know about Jean lying awake for hours every night, missing the heat of his body against him in their bed. He doesn’t need to know about the evenings Jean has spent curled on Cat’s shoulder in the living room, staring aimlessly at the television in front of them without absorbing a single thing. He doesn’t need to know that Jean is dying, slowly, inside, a little bit every day. He doesn’t need to know any of that. And he won’t. Not if Jean can help it.
In Jean's fifth year, Jeremy goes pro in San Francisco. They make it work. They have to.

Summary
Andrew stares blankly down at Neil’s bare fourth finger. Then he looks up at Neil’s scarred face, his deep blue eyes that stand out even against the summer horizon of this godforsaken city, and he wonders yet again if he knows about the ring tucked away in the bottom drawer of the double vanity.
One more surprise, Abram. I think I want to marry you.
Andrew buys a ring. It takes a while before he makes any use of it.

Summary
“Do you want to tell everyone?” comes Jeremy’s voice all of a sudden.
Jean turns to face him. “What?”
“I just mean—” Jeremy shakes his head. “We don’t have to, like, make it a big deal. I mean, obviously Cat and Laila are going to find out pretty quickly either way, and they should be the first ones to know from our mutual friends regardless. But for the rest of them…” Jeremy trails off, his smile easy as it stretches east to west across the bottom half of his face. He is so beautiful, Jean thinks hopelessly, endlessly.
Jean and Jeremy attempt to keep their new relationship private.

“I want this,” Jeremy says, his voice cracking as the words tumble hopelessly out. “I want to keep playing. I think I will die if I don’t. Jean, I—”
“Okay,” says Jean, thumbing under his eyes. “Then you will keep playing.”
Jeremy shakes his head. “Is it really that simple?”
“Yes,” says Jean. “It is.”
Jeremy navigates the reality of his future. He also navigates the reality of Jean.

Finally, Jean shifts. “The psychiatrist,” he starts, then stops, and Jeremy’s eyes go wide. “He told me that I…I need to stop associating the water with negative things. We are working on that during my sessions.”
“Okay,” says Jeremy softly. “Is there anything, ah, good? Positive? That would help you in there?”
Jean looks pained. “Yes, but I cannot ask that of you.”
Jeremy stares at him. Then he realizes what Jean means.

“You signed the contract to play for us,” says Jeremy, and he sounds a little helpless. Jean spins around and stares at him.
“I did not know,” he says. “I did not know what Kevin was doing until it was too late. He did not give me a choice. Neil didn’t either, I—I was—” Dying. Breaking. Drowning. Drowning. Drowning. “No. It does not matter. I do not have any other option. I have to play. I will die if I don’t.”

“I hate you,” says Andrew. He thinks about the version of Neil in his dreams, the one that slipped beneath his covers with him at Easthaven and slept next to him with two feet of space between their hands. He should have known it was a dream the moment Neil climbed into his bed—nobody gives Andrew his space. Nobody enters his bed and does not immediately press themselves to him as close as possible.

Summary
A little ahead, Lyney is still talking to the man, and Wriothesley still feels sick to his gut, so. He supposes he can revisit his earlier hypothesis about simply going mad and cross it off as a definite no.
He’s not going mad. He’s just jealous.
Great.
It’s a bit torturous, being in love with someone who will not return your feelings. Wriothesley would know.
