Summary
On March 31, 1661, the English King's sister marries the French King's brother. This contract is often seen as one of King Louis XIV's first autonomous acts as King of France, negotiated with Henrietta's mother. Neither groom nor bride chose the match; and although the marriage celebration is sublime, neither is truly happy on this fine March day, and the groom flees his marriage bed to find solace elsewhere.

“So you're married,” the Chevalier says quietly. His breath grazes Philippe's lips, and as much as he loves that voice, he wishes it to be quiet for now. “And to a princess of England. Impressive.” Philippe hears himself snorting, but before he gets in a word, the other continues. “You looked quite happy with her, I wish you two all the best.” His voice is dripping with sarcasm, a grotesque charade of felicitations.
“My dear-” Philippe tries to get in, to defuse the situation, but the Chevalier won't let him. His voice grows sharper still.

Summary
Joel’s pleading face. The desperation in his voice. The acrid combination of smoke, dust, and iron on his tongue as he whispers his brother's name. All of it creates a horrific tableau in Tommy’s mind that he can’t shut out.
He’s heard grown men dressed in body armor and military fatigues make the same noises his 14-year-old niece, dressed in a purple band t-shirt and marked-up jeans, is making now.
He’s watched the life drain from their eyes as surely as he sees it draining from hers. He knows this end, and he knows it's much, much too late.

Summary
After Sam turns and Henry is forced to shoot him, he goes to shoot himself as well - but, because Joel lunges at him, he misses, leaving Joel to deal with a grieving, suicidal twenty-year-old and a sobbing fourteen-year-old who's grieving for more than one person. He handles it... surprisingly well, taking good care of both of them. He holds both as they cry, tells them about Sarah, buries Sam, tries to snap Ellie out of her guilt and Henry out of his suicidal thoughts, and he manages to (relatively) succeed, even though he's still a mess himself.
