Summary
In what was becoming far too much of a trend, Chara was laying awake at night.
It wasn't that they minded their arrangement of sharing a body with Frisk. They couldn't, really, not when it had given them so much.
It was just... sometimes they worried about what that meant for their future, and they weren't sure if there was anything they could do to stop it.
They most assuredly did not ask for any of the fanfare.

Really, they weren't. They just...
They just had to plan a date, and maybe that was harder than it looked, but they could figure it out!
They just needed to talk to the right people, and shake off some nerves. They'd be fine.
(or; a fic ironically titled, considering chara spends a solid chunk of it doing exactly that.)

It clicks.
Will pieces it together slowly. Avery’s bloodshot eyes. The sudden radio silence during the New Years. The short time period in which it seems to have happened. The mess of the apartment.
The unfamiliar, red hoodie he hasn’t stopped wearing.
Holy shit, Will thinks.
Avery's going through a break up.

“Goodbye, everybody. Thank you for today.”
The chat flies by furiously with goodbyes before the Minecraft screen closes in on itself, and then a final click. The screen that shows up is D3lord3’s familiar homescreen that fans have grown to memorize. A Minecraft moving landscape that changes from night to day. Right now, it’s in the middle of a sunset, the monitor enveloped in orange and warmth.

Summary
"Derek. Wake up." The voice reaches him first, thinned by distance, as though it has had to pass through water to get there. Then the light follows, golden yellow and unforgiving where it spills through the apartment window and lays itself across his closed eyelids like a hand that will not let him go. His eyes open reluctantly and the ceiling above him is the wrong one, not because it is strange, but because the hairline crack from the smoke detector to the corner feels known in a way that makes his chest tighten before he can place why. Mind slow and viscous, he blinks at it. He knows the crack. Knows, too, the faint water stain near the vent and the way morning light catches in the uneven paint beside wall, turning old white into something tired and yellowed.
Then a face leans into view. Pale skin dusted with freckles. Bright green eyes that have looked at him thousands of times before. Auburn hair cut short, burning copper where the sun catches it.
In that moment, Derek forgets how to breathe and for that same span his mind gives him nothing until it does.
Avery.
