    Summary

The girl fell to her knees. The witch turned their back. The body dangled over their shoulder, like a dead man. A dead man was what he was going to be, in this cruel, cruel world that begrudged making the slightest bit of room for him.

"No," Olruggio's voice broke with fear, "Let him go—"

The arms holding him suddenly went slack, and down among the stars, Olruggio fell.

In the wake of the upheaval, Olruggio tries to navigate a life that waits for no one. The dead man is sometimes there to help, sometimes he isn't.

    Summary

He understands. Of course he does. If he were to write out the deepest desire of his heart onto pages like a poet deeply in love, it would become a melody sung across the four corners of the land. But it's condemned to remain only a dream, a heart locked in chains like a box that cannot be opened.

"Qifrey, say something," says Olruggio, faintly. Even now, even in this desperate state, he's as gentle, as thoughtful as ever. Even while wanting him to answer, his words offer Qifrey the space to shatter his heart, the gap to slip away into, to flee.

"You understand me, don't you?" he asks once more.

The one time Qifrey attempts to leave.
